jim harbaugh along with qb colin kaepernick and others held a news conference. they made a point of saying even though they are in the land of mardi gras, this is, like you mentioned, a business trip. they're trying to make this a normal week with their first practice tonight at the saints training facility. harbaugh acknowledging that he is a rookie super bowl coach venturing into unchartered waters. >> that's exciting, too. we have a great thrill and a great desire to be in uncharted waters. our coaches and our players have always, always relished that, always thrived in that kind of environment. >> i think if you're prepared for a situation, you're going to be confident when you go out to try to win a football game or whatever you're doing. if you're prepared for it, you're going to be confident. it's just head down, keep working. this isn't a time to relax and get out of your routine or stop working hard. this one you should be working your hardest. >> working their hardest with so

many distractions around them. first parades of the mardi gras carnival kicked off this weekend. they continue throughout the week with a break on super bowl sunday. even though new orleans has hosted the super bowl several times before, this is only the second time that both events have coincided. more than a million people are expected in new orleans for these two monumental events. reporting live outside the new 49ers stadium here in santa clara, bob redell, nbc bay area news. so far the team seems to be in a relaxed mood, just soaking everything up. quarterback colin kaepernick was so excited he tweeted out an instagram photo of his plane seat on the airplane, of course. his caption reads, quote, i ain't ever seen a plane seat like this. >> good quarterback, bad grammar. but just then moments later the niners soint this picture of kaepernick looking very happy in that fine seat of his. both those pictures have been retweeted hundreds of times and linked by thousands on instagram. there are also a lot of

niners fans going to sunday's game, but there's one fan who is getting a little extra special treatment. >> yes, he is. longtime niners fan kerry white is headed down to the ninth sixers super bowl and it is all due to jed york. white thought this one was fake, but we can tell you it is real. york wanted to give two tickets to a very loyal fan with a great story. >> and white can thank an ssgate article talking about his five previous super bowl trips. he was planning to watch this one from home, but now he's headed to the big easy hoping to witness another great win. >> to go to six, this is totally blessed. i'm still kind of in shock, to tell you the truth. i just didn't think it was going to happen. >> how exciting. white will be taking his friend's nephew to the super bowl. >> the guy's a good luck charm. five for five so far.

you, jon. san francisco mayor ed lee talked jobs and legislation saying that san francisco is a city that's resurgent and strong. and yes, he did, take a minute to talk about the san francisco 49ers and their big super bowl run. we had a packed house at college track in the bayview. that's a new center that helps underserved students reach their college goals. in the crowd former san francisco mayor willie brown. lee asked brown to actually go easy on his speech in reviewing it since it's his first state of the city. lee said that unemployment is down to 6.5% compared to over 9% when he first took office. that downtown south of market business is moving in. san francisco he says remains a top destination for tourists. there are a number of big cranes working downtown, meaning more construction jobs. he's painting a picture of a city with a balanced two-year budget getting back on track. >> from the sunset to the mission to right here in the

bayview, we're witnessing a rebirth of local manufacturing. fashion, artisanal food production that bear the label "made in san francisco." yes. >> reporter: now, he also talked up a new warriors arena, america's cup, he mentioned the world series champions san francisco giants as a point of pride. and he said in a number of days as the beloved 49ers will play in their first super bowl in 18 years with the entire city and region behind them. but he said looking forward his focus remains creating jobs. reporting live, christie smith. a car crash took the lives of three young men last night. it happened on the off ramp from 92 to chevy boulevard shutting down all lanes for hours. officers say their car swerved off the freeway, hit the

guardrail, flipped over and slammed into a utility poll. two brothers from redwood city ages 12 and 16 were found dead in the backseat. their 18-year-old brother was taken to stanford medical center with major injuries. the driver, a 21-year-old man from san mateo, died at stanford medical center. none of the victims' names has been released. the chp determined that no other vehicles were involved in that crash. it's not yet determined if drugs or alcohol were involved. >> such a sad story there. well, a menlo park woman and her 2-year-old son just thankful to be alive after they were shot over the weekend. police say people inside two cars got into a fight at a st stoplight at about 7:45 saturday night when somebody in one of those cars opened fire. the woman and the boy were both hit in the legs and a bullet grazes the boy's head. police say the victims were able to actually drive to a nearby mcdonald's to get help. both fortunately are expected to be okay.

those suspects remain on the run. a recent rash of thefts and burglaries in a normally quite part of san jose has neighbors on edge. a neighborhood safety meeting drew so many people in almaden valley last night they could not fit inside the pizza parlor where the meeting was being held. one of the tips offered to neighbors is to band together. >> let the neighbors know how to protect each other and how to keep an eye open for each other and organize through the neighborhood watch program and ultimately be the eyes and the ears of the police department. >> neighbors say they're worried the police do not have enough officers in that area. many neighbors showed up because of a recent home invasion robbery in which an elderly couple was tied up. the retrial of the crime lab drug scandal in san francisco is about to come to an end. closing arguments being made today in the case of the lab technician accused of taking cocaine from the facility. debra madden was given a mistrial back in october after jurors just couldn't agree on a

verdict to charges. she obtained the drug by fraud or by deception. madden's defense lawyers are arguing she did not deceive anybody in this case which is an element which is needed for conviction under the law. the man accused of opening fire inside oakland's university and killing seven people is back in court today. a judge will determine whether one goh will be held until he is deemed competent to stand trial. he'll most likely be treated for schizophrenia at napa state hospital. the court will receive a progress report every 90 days. earlier this month a judge decided goh was incompetent to stand trial. prosecutors say he plans the killing spree after becoming angry with school officials over a tuition dispute. some quirky fixtures with tiny beards and mini little pants on there in oakland could be removed by pg&e. they wear knickers. dozen of tiny gnomes have popped up attached to fences and power

poles there. pg&e says it's concerned that the screws they drill into the walls there to will compromise the structural integrity of the phone poles and prompt others to attach creations to the poles which creates a maintenance issue for utility workers. but neighbor say the gnomes bring joy to passers by and prompting gnome hunts out there. and the neighbors, some feel they should just be left alone. >> hopefully they can find some even ground. >> make everybody happy. show the love. >> like the weather. there's a warm-up. >> there's a story you don't hear every day. 11:10 now. we're getting spoiled this week. spoiled. enjoy it. temperatures right now are still cold enough for a jacket. you'll probably need that sweater all day long, but we're headed towards the 70s. just want to show you the contrast between san jose which you're seeing now and san francisco. yeah, those clouds still hanging out over san jose. meanwhile, crystal clear over the bay right at the immediate

well, today marks a somber day in history for nasa's former shuttle program. it was 27 years ago today when space shuttle "challenger" exploded shortly after liftoff from florida's cape canaveral. seven people died in that 1986 disaster including new hampshire school mcauliffe. the main cause of the explosion was a failure of a seal in the rocket booster due to cold. set to to announce a major compromise surrounding immigration. the small bipartisan group of senators coming up with a four-page plan outlining immigration reform. this includes a path for citizenship for those who enter the country illegally. it also covers border security and a guest worker employer verification program. some workers are hoping this plan will be their ticket to

winning that 2016 election. >> we are losing dramatically the hispanic vote, which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons. >> americans support it in poll after poll. secondly, latino voters expect it. third, the democrats want it. and fourth, republicans need it. >> president obama will talk about the senate compromise when he visits las vegas today to lay out his own version on immigration. jon, the compromise also covers the highly educated workers which high tech covets. scott mcgrew says that silicon valley has been waiting a long time for immigration reform. >> good morning. the immigration has been a huge issue for high tech. and here's the perfect example of the problem. this couple they founded a software firm while attending the university of wisconsin, started hiring their friends, paid almost a million dollars in business taxes, then they had to go home to india because their student visas ran out. now, the business still exists,

whenever you see those puffy fair weather clouds it means temperatures and thins are right on average. today we'll hit the upper 50s. we're slated to do so. temperatures climbing in concord, 52, 54 in oakland. and 52 in sunnyvale. a nice day ahead. temperatures will touch on the upper 50s, then hit the 60s tomorrow, closer to the 70s to kick off the week and finally getting to that weekend where we'll hold on to really comfortable conditions. make those plans while you can. 7:00 p.m. today we'll see clouds roll back onshore. stop that clock for you again as we get to tomorrow morning. a little bit of drizzle around. we should see fog and cloud cover hugging the coast but most of the bay area nice and clear to start. by 11:00 a.m. we'll see the cloud cover tomorrow. kind of settling into the inland valleys. that's an indication of high pressure, that ridge of high pressure that's going to bring your temperatures way up. 57 degrees in livermore today. 57 for fremont. right around 60 in napa. there's our warming agent, big

this weekend a film based on the true store of oakland's oscar graham taking home top honors at sundance. >> you got plans for the night? >> "fruitvale" stars octavia spencer and michael b. jordan as oscar graham himself. it follows the 24 hours leading up to the shooting by b.a.r.t. police officer that killed the unarmed 22-year-old. oscar graham's uncle just returned from sundance up in utah where he attended the film's premiere. >> we knew that this movie would help us share with the world who oscar was. you know, no one is perfect. you know? we all should be entitled to some redemptive acceptance in our lives. >> "fruitvale" was a big hit up there winning the grand jury

prize and the sundance audience award. this is the first feature length film directed by ryan coogler of richmond. the weinstein family paying to distribute "fruitvale." so far no release date. jeremy lin stopped by for the final screening of "linsanity." documenting his sudden rise to stardom. >> so lin and the filmmakers got a standing o in the packed theater last night. the filmmaker said when he first approached lin about the documentary, lin was not too excited about it, but he eventually warmed up to the idea. >> he's like, i'm not a -- i'm not kim kardashian. i'm not reality. i don't want that kind of attention. i'm just a ball player, you know. and for me, a ball player with an awesome story. so you know, let's try something. >> the more that i went through
